Option three:

Transforming the digital curriculum at Sheffield Hallam University

The Academy of Sport and Physical Activity (ASPA) at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) has been undertaking a transformative 'Digital Curriculum' project to boost student development and employability. Discipline-specific digital capabilities are well covered through teaching, however students are also developing a range of general digital capabilities and skills, yet these are often overlooked when applying for jobs or during interviews. This project serves to surface development of these general capabilities, as well as identifying and addressing gaps in digital capabilities, while developing students’ ability to articulate their digital capabilities. The Jisc Digital Capability Framework is used as the basis of a shared language amongst staff members, as well as between staff and students, and development is supported through the use of the Jisc Discovery Tool to allow staff and students to explore their existing capabilities and plan activities to further develop where necessary.

This session will provide further information on process and progress, with a focus on the staff engagement approach as this is critical for success. The project is also being adopted more widely within SHU, and we will touch on how it has been received in areas not involved in the initial development of the approach.

  • Ian Glover, Senior Lecturer in Academic Development (Digital Capability) at Sheffield Hallam University
  • Dr Beth Fielding-Lloyd, Head of Teaching and Learning Enhancement at Sheffield Hallam University
