About
The University of Northampton built a whole new university from the ground up, designed to reflect the way that students actually learn rather than the way they have traditionally been expected to learn. The £330m Waterside Campus project focused on active blended learning as part of curriculum developments to inform a radical new design for the campus which opened in 2018.
Since then, the innovative learning spaces at Northampton have enabled staff to continue to design learning with considerations of time, mode and space at the core. This is what we’ll be exploring during this one-day ‘Rethinking learning and curriculum design’ event.
You will have the opportunity to hear about Northampton’s approach to designing learning spaces within a purpose built campus. A range of key senior staff at Northampton will talk and be present during the day to discuss their role in Waterside developments, thinking differently about the integration of the library and other services, the impact of the first few years of opening and future plans for development. There will also be the opportunity to see first-hand some of the amazing spaces being discussed.
You will also have the opportunity of hearing about Jisc’s latest research in supporting staff with designing learning for beyond blended with new approaches for engaging students in different spaces, places and modes of interaction.

Waterside: a very peculiar Campus?
In this keynote, Chris Powis (Director of Library and Learning / Student Services) will provide a warts and all background to the development of the Waterside Campus. The £330m project focused on active blended learning as part of curriculum developments to inform a radical new design which opened in 2018. The campus challenges conventional thinking around place / space and timetabling. Chris will talk about his role in the project, thinking differently about the integration of teaching, learning and student facing services, the impact of the first few years of opening and future plans for development.

Guiding Principles for curriculum and learning design
Participants will review a set of guiding principles for curriculum and learning design which build on evolving notions of space, place and modes of participation. Participants will be asked to discuss and share: thoughts on the 5 principles, how they might use the resources, what else would add value to the resources?

Strategic Lenses for Guiding Principles
Participants will review a set of strategic lenses for the 5 design principles explored in the previous session. Participants will be asked to discuss and share: thoughts on the lenses, how they might use then, what else would add value to the resources?
