Data protection awareness

Online training module covering data protection principles and legislation.

About

The UK data protection regime is set out in the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA 2018) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These require employees to be aware of the rights of individuals to have their personal data treated lawfully and fairly as well as being kept secure.

This digital learning module on data protection awareness outlines the responsibilities of good data protection both at an individual and institutional level. By understanding the ‘data protection principles’ which lie at the heart to processing personal data you will learn the best approach to ensure you are compliant to DPA 2018 and the GDPR.

For any institution accountability and transparency are key. If something does go wrong, being able to show that the risks were actively considered, and appropriate measures and safeguards were put in place can help mitigate against any potential enforcement action.

Content preview

This module takes staff members through the legal obligations that apply when:

  • Collecting personal data
  • Using and processing data
  • Sharing personal data

It highlights the appropriate technical and organisational measures that need to be in place to keep personal data secure.

They will be introduced to the “data protection principles” which should lie at the heart of the approach to processing personal data. Compliance with these key principles is a fundamental building block for good data protection practice.

Members of staff are responsible for ensuring that appropriate care is taken when handling personal data. This includes the purpose it is being used for and its protection in terms of security and confidentiality.

Each of the four learning sections has a scenario, knowledge checking questions throughout and summary. The module ends with a final assessment and successful completion of the module is dependent upon passing this assessment.
