About security conference 2023

Defend as one to secure an open, resilient, digital future.

  • 21-22 November, ICC Wales
  • 23 November, online

Our seventh annual security conference shared advice, stories and learnings as we came together to defend as one

The 2023 three-day event comprised:

  • Day one (in person) – sessions addressing key challenges as a community
  • Day two (in person) – featuring presentations dedicated to our members and customers, and personal deep-dive experiences
  • Day three (online) – a fully virtual day aimed at reaching as many members as possible to engage with cyber security

Programme themes

Four key themes ran through each day, providing a broad understanding of the steps you need to take going forward to stay safe. We covered the importance of utilising our core security services and how data protection and information security around risks and control backups can help keep your organisation secure.

Defending through innovation – We explored next-generation security innovations and ideas that showcased architectures and technologies such as AI, to address the changing threat landscape.

Threats, risks and vulnerabilities – We examined the current and potential threats, risks and vulnerabilities facing our community and the ways in which we can respond and mitigate.

Resilient community – We learned how the community is nurturing a strong cyber ecosystem and defending the sector as one and became equipped with the appropriate skills, standards and services to bolster education and research resilience.

Prevention is better than a cure – Staff and students are key to culture building and reducing the risk; mandatory awareness training is key. Recruitment is a known problem, so we learned how to upskill the existing workforce and share best practice.

Sustainability - reducing our global impact

We work hard to reduce the impact that security conference 2023 has on the environment, locally and globally.

Location

Security conference 2023 took place in person on the 21 and 22 November at the ICC Wales. The ICC Wales has several measures in place to reduce its environmental impact which include:

  • Continuing to minimise the amount of waste disposed of as general waste, increasing recycling and supporting the circular economy, by providing the correct level of waste receptacles
  • Reducing packaging waste by using recyclable packaging where possible
  • Using locally grown products and create menus around seasonal ingredients
  • Using low emission vehicles for travel between ICC Wales sister sites for staff members
  • Using LED lighting throughout the venue
  • Publishing performance on environmental performance
  • By offering the opportunity to attend online on the 9 November, hundreds of delegates will not need to travel to Newport

Exhibition

We work with exhibition suppliers who offer multiple display deliveries and re-use stands which further reduce the environmental impact vs traditional 'space only' events.

We actively encourage exhibitors to be mindful of their environmental impact.

The approach we take with our exhibitions encourages the use of digital messaging, reducing the opportunity for printed materials, graphics, and giveaways.

At the event

The security conference app significantly reduces the amount of printing required at the event. Any event printing is now FSC certified and fully recyclable. All laminate or UV finishes have been removed from our marketing materials, ensuring that recycling can occur.

Our lanyards are made of bamboo and PET materials that are biodegradable.

The use of Foamex materials has been replaced with recyclable alternatives for any signage or branding at events. We have eliminated the use of vinyl opting for alternative recyclable or reusable materials.
