Tech 2 Tech - Beyond IP

About

The Janet network runs over dark fibre, optical and Ethernet infrastructure that Jisc leases or buys from providers such as OpenReach. Jisc runs IP over that infrastructure, both IPv4 and IPv6, and that provides the basis of the Internet connectivity our members enjoy. But there is also an increasing interest in the R&E community in non-IP services. In this session we’ll explore topics including:

• How does Janet currently make use of fibre optic infrastructure?
• How can technologies such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Optical Time and Frequency Networking (OTFN) also make use of that infrastructure, and what is their current state of deployment in R&E networks?
• What is hollow-core fibre, how mature is it, and what benefits does it bring?
